Illegal immigration from Mexico and Latin America- it's really not a problem, so relax.

Bill! Mexicans are taking over America and turning it in to Mexico. I don’t like it, -it scares me.

Really? Poor Mexican and Latin American immigrants scare you? Really? Then you’re a wuss. That is right. Anyone afraid of illegal immigrants from Mexico and Latin America is a total wuss. They just want to come here and make a good life for their families, just like my great grandmother Mary Clancy who got off the boat form Ireland, did. Same thing, just a different century. I’m sure there were some 1870’s wuss’ afraid of her too, like she was going to take away those choice potato picking jobs in Indiana.

But they might change the culture.

Yes, they will. They already have and guess what? We are still alive! All immigrants change the culture of their adopted country somewhat. It isn’t a bad thing. Some Europeans may think it’s not a good thing because, for the most part, their countries have been pretty much homogenous. Now with more liberal immigration policy they have more immgrants, and they haven’t gotten used to it yet. They have a pretty set culture and new immigrants don’t just blend in to their new adopted countries’ established culture. It seems like a lot European people expected them to- they expected them to become just like the country they now live in – Such Algerians in France to drink wine and like Jerry Lewis, or Turkish immigrants to start drink beer in Bavaria and like David Hasslehoff. Well guess what? It just doesn’t happen. They blend a bit, root for the German and French football teams instead o the Algerian and Turkish teams. They’ll watch the local shows, speak the local language, play Nintendo Mario games like everybody else, and so on. But they still eat their native food, celebrate their holidays, and worship they way they want. It’s fine. Now Germany has cool Turkish food, and a new flavor to their culture. French now has some North African influence, make these countries more complex and interesting

We, on the other hand, are used to it new culture coming in.  America has an ever changing culture where new immigrants, be they German, Polish, Italian, Chinese, Canadian, Puerto Rican, Irish, Vietnamese, Scottish, English (Did I get everybody? No. I won’t be able to. Too many to list), all add to America’s culture, enriching it, evolving it. So this is just the latest wave.

Little Italy is awesome! So is Chinatown. I love Halloween – Thank you Irish! Cinco De Mayo is great time to eat Mexican food, celebrate Mexico and drink tequila. Day of the Dead is awesome! Chinese gave of fireworks, and Princess Chicken. The Canadians gave us Shatner and Michael J Fox. The English gave us Tolkien. Italians gave us Francis Ford Coppala. Humas is great. I’m glad Einstein immigrated to the US rather than stay in Hitler’s Third Reich.

A foreign friend of mine said “You Americans when you go out to lunch ask what countries’ food do you want to it eat – Mexican, Thais, Chinese, Italian, Sushi? Back home we just go eat lunch.” How sad is that? They are stuck with only one culture to experience day to day. We can experience myriad.

We get to experience several new years- Chinese, Celtic (Halloween), and Jewish.

So really, what is the big deal? Infusions of new cultures make the US richer, and a more interesting and unique place. It literally makes us the most powerful country in the world, and is a unique strength of ours. Talented people would rather live with us than in Communist country, or a fundamentalist religious country, or a country that only wants one race. Our tolerance for immigrants will be our saving grace in the next century. Fear of immigrants will just hurt us. Time to throw fear out the door if want to stay one of the most important countries in the world.

If we just let them all in at once we won’t be able to absorb them.

Probably not.

Wait, You mean keep them out?

No.

Then what?

Keep it the way it is and not worry. Some get in. Some get shipped out. Some get citizenship. Some don’t. Some go back. Keep it the way it is because currently, it isn’t a problem. Pleas etell me where the problems is.

Hispanic gangs!

Uh, there are always gangs. They just change ethic groups over the years. Ever see Gangs of New York? Irish gangs. All ethnic groups have gangs.

They take our jobs.

No, some Singaporese artist took my job. Not too many Latin American immigrants can do backgrounds for Monkey Island special edition. The future is competing with the rest of the world for jobs. For the most part Latin American immigrants aren’t competing for my job (that may change soon). I need to be better than artists in China, India, Southeast Asia, and many other parts of the world. THAT is who is taking our jobs. It’s called globalization, not immigration. Be prepared for that. Worry about the really talented hard working guy who will do your job for half your salary and who has NO desire to come here. He’ll be taking your job, not the guy hanging out in front of home depot.

It’s against the law!!!

So is smoking pot (for now), parking in handicap spots, underage drinking, and driving without a license in your wallet or purse- crimes 90% of us have committed. They are all laws that have various degrees of importance. We don’t have cops guarding every handicap parking space, do we? Because it’s not that important of a law- we don’t need to spend the money on it because it not that important. Illegal immigration is a law that needs to be enforced, but it’s not as important as laws that prevent and punish crimes like child abuse, domestic violence or rape. I’d rather we spend more money to prevent those crimes than build a 2000 mile fence that won’t work to keep coyotes out (the real ones and the human ones). Law enforcement is about priorities, - where to spend out limited law enforcement dollars, and illegal immigration has not yet proven to me be such a problem that it needs to moved up the priority list from where it is now.

Okay, smarty pants. What should we do?

Status quo. Keep it the way it is. Don’t let them all in, don’t waste a ton of ineffectual law enforcement dollars keeping them all out. And stop demonizing immigrants. I think a lot of this is just pure xenophobia and fear of an altered culture.

Fear and why it's bad for you

I fear a lot of things, especially the things I can’t see or control. Is this good or bad?

It is bad, but natural. The brain is not perfect, we evolved our brains from reptiles, then we evolved the limbic or mammalian brain, then humans and some animal got this awesome gift – THE CEREBREAL CORTEX!!!!!

            Angels and God is in heaven, high up in the sky. God represent forgiveness, understanding, empathy and reason. The devil lives down below, deep underground; he represents evil, hatred, pride, chauvinism, and irrationality.

This is a perfect analogy for our brains: heaven represents the cerebral cortex and the R Complex (R standing for Reptile) is the old lowest part of the brain.

So the challenge for humans is to have our cerebral cortex override our R Complex.

Give me an example Bill.

Well we fear medicine like immunization shots, or silicone in breast implants, right? Million have been paid out by big business to people that convinced jurys that immunization shots and silicone breast implant hurt them. Well that belief is all R Complex, because after millions of dollars spent on studies by BOTH SIDES, no, zero, zilch, none, nada scientific evidence has backed up these beliefs. They are ‘beliefs,’ not facts. The R Complex survives on belief, the cerebral cortex relies on facts.

Now normally I think Big Business is motivated more by money than helping human beings, but in this case I believe the big companies got screwed, and the people who worked for them who got laid off to pay off these million dollar awards did too.

But Bill, I have personal evidence that this is true? My (insert relation here) got sick right after (he/she) got (immunization shots/ breast implants).

Mr. Cerebral cortex would realize that personal anecdotes don’t represent the majority of the cases, and court cases can’t be decided by jus one incident. The R Complex is perfectly persuaded by a few personal experiences, projecting them out to everyone. This is called a Logical Fallacy, specifically the Anecdotal Fallacy.  

Here is an example of a logical Fallacy.

“My grandpa lived to 110 and smoked like a chimney. So I don’t believe smoking is bad for you.”

That is R Complex simple. He might be alive, but he had to suck oxygen, had brittle arteries, and had one lung removed. Plus there are genetic factors that can counter the bad effects of smoking the 99% of smokers don’t have. The cerebral cortex knows things are not black and white, but shades of gray. The world is complicated and one answer does not fit all situations.

The R Complex wants simple explanations, and thus come up with simple quick answers. If an answer is simple, quick and easy, then that means it is probably wrong and your R Complex, notorious for being lazy, won out.

So what you are saying is the challenge of human beings is we have to fight this evil R Complex that tries to make us fear everything and come to simple, black and white solutions, but we have this reasoning wise cerebral cortex that tries to counter it with facts, reason, wisdom and logic.

Uh, yeah. So every time we run in to a challenge or a fear, I think we need to ask ourselves “which part of our brains is talking, what part is making the decision for us, the devil side or Godly side? Am I giving into fear and ignoring reason, or have I successfully ignored fear and listen to my higher brain?

This is our cross to bear, our constant fight. Life is more complex for us than for animals, but we are rewarded with awesome experiences and intelligent consciousness. I think this struggle we have to deal with the two parts our brain is worth the rewards we get for being human.

But with great power comes great responsibility. The world is too dangerous of a place to constantly give into our R Complexes. We have the built bombs that can blow up the world several times, and Mars too if we wanted. If we give into our R Complex and fear, the consequence is that we needlessly throw away our unique human gift.

So I should not watch Fox News because it panders to my R Complex?

No. Don’t watch Fox News. You can watch Fox network- the Simpsons, and reruns of 21 Jump Street, but not Fox News. The Simpsons is actually wiser than Fox News. Seriously, it is.

But it gives me pride to stand up to reasonable thought and facts. I feel like the lone savior who stands up to the mindless masses.

Hubris and pride are both major parts of the R-Complex. The devil was sent to hell for pride wasn’t he?

Yes, this is a psychological phenomenon in which people are more likely to stubbornly stand up to the majority opinion because it invigorates their pride.

“Screw the majority and their irrefutable facts. I am proudly stubborn! I disagree with overwhelming evidence. Screw you! I’m stubborn and I fell good about being stubborn even if I’m clearly dead wrong. Screw the truth!”

Yep, there is the R Complex talking, fully in the driver seat. That person has failed and threw wisdom and reason out the window, they might as well be a reptile. Humans use reason and think; reptiles just go with what they feel. Hopefully this person isn’t president.

But loyalty to my (cause/ political party/ social economic status, regional culture/ religion) is more important than reason and wisdom. I’m not changing my mind if it goes against my cause. It would be traitorous.

Another psychological phenomena that comes right from the R Complex, its called chauvinism- blindly loyal to a cause. The Nazis, the Japanese in 1940, Italians under Mussolini, the KKK, Al Qaeda, all got and still get recruits because of this R Complex flaw.

Would you drive off a cliff. No.

Would you drive off a cliff if blind folded. Maybe.

Would you drive off a cliff if you were blind folded and not sitting in the driver seat? Most likely.

Well that is what it’s like if you follow a cause blindly, you drive off a cliff and get hurt, and hurt others.

 This is why you must question your leaders, challenge them, and never give into calls of patriotism and loyalty. Those are just requests for you to put your blind folds on, cerebrela cortex on the shelf, sit in the passenger seat, and trust the driver won’t go off a cliff.

Unfortunately, with all the day to day stuff we have to deal with its just easier to leave the hard thinking up to someone else than to take time out and use the upper brain to say “ Hey, maybe invading Iraq was bad thing because the evidence was thin and most likely manufactured, and Iraq doesn’t represent an immediate threat. Maybe we should just fund the Kurds and the Shiites, aid them in their fight and have them earn their own freedom like we earned ours back in 1776. Sure the French and Spanish helped, but they didn’t suffer, worked hard and earn the freedom for us. We did it ourselves and now we have a lot of confidence and national self esteem because of it. Maybe that would be better.”

Or…

“Hmmm, maybe we shouldn’t invade Poland with force. Why not make really good products, sell that to them, and with the profits we make BUY what we need from them instead of taking it by force. This way no one dies and there isn’t any destruction. Plus I could piss off stronger countries and who will kick my butt. Maybe that would be better.”

Where are all the aliens? If life evolves where  the conditions are right, there should be hundreds of civilized planets out there?

Continued intelligent life is not a given. Because evolution works by starting simple and evolving to more complex forms, and it works with what it has, we unfortunately are stuck with this part of the brain. It worked great when we were primitives, and had no world killing tech.  But with rockets, nukes, biological weapons, experimental zombie viruses, maybe the R Complex is not such a good thing now.

Assuming evolution works the same on other planets, and there isn’t any good arguments to think it works radically different, then maybe the lack of aliens has to do with the fact those aliens failed to control their R-Complexes, and thus used ray guns on each other and killed themselves off.

The question that we all have to answer is: do we want to be one of those suicidal civilizations, or do we want to be the exception?’  We can’t get rid our R-Complexes, just like we can’t get rid of evil (See No Country for Old Men, Halloween, and Shadows and Fog for great analogies for ever enduring R Complex), but we can use our great gift, the cerebral cortex, to fight it, and keep it in check.

Juan William should have been punished for what he said on Fox

Why Bill? Why?
He is a public figure who's words can affect how people view his emploreys and their company. So he broejk that rule, and he should be punished and wrane dnot to do it agian. I don't think he should be fired.

What did he says that was so bad?
He perpetuated a stereotype, a very negative one at that, about a religious and ethic minority. Now it is legal to say these things all you want. But it is also legal for a company you work for, one that is trying to be the network for everyone and neutral, to fire you if you say them on TV.

Well, he was being honest.
And so was Hitler when he said he thought the Jews were bad (Juan Williams is not Hitler. Really, only Hitler was Hitler, and I just use this exaggerated example to make a point).

Stereotypes are bad, even seemingly positive ones are bad, but a lot of people don't seem to know why. They are bad because even if the majority of a group fits into one, there is still a sizable minority that doesn't and they don't want to be put into that category. They find it a blow to their morale, limiting in their potential and just frustrating simple minded. It can lead to not getting the job they want or school they want, and worse they might even start to believe a stereotype about themselves and feel bad when they don't fit it. Plus stereotypes can be just dead wrong.

I, for instance, can't stand the fact that people assume I am child molester if a child wanders near me in park or a store. I am not. But the parents fear of the single white man in public makes many of them assume I am. I am the father of three kids, have never been arrested in my life, and would give my life to save a child from any harm, even a child I didn't know. I am quite th e opposite of a child molester. But no one wants to take the chance that I am not.

Another example of a positive stereotype that is bad is the assumption that just because some one is black that they are good at basketball, or athletics in general. Sports and thematics are an important part of many African american communities but there are millions of blacks who don't care for sports, aren't good at it, and really just don't care who wins the super bowl. Whites and even other blacks who are into sports may put them down for not fitting this stereotype, and it just make those people feel bad, like outcasts or freaks, when clearly they aren't.

Shouldn't people live in fear of people who fit a steroe type just to be on the safe side?
No. Peopel should use their barins. For example Juan Williams Says  "I am afaird of seeing an othdox Muslim in full regalia when I am on a plane because he could be a terrorist."  If JW used his brain he'd remmeber the 9/11 muslim terrorists tried to blend in- not styand out and draw attention to themselves. So logically the mulsim in full orthodox garb would be the least likely person to be a terrorist. As far as we now know, Al Queda is trying to recruit white european looking muslims to commit terrorist acts because they are using their brains and know we are looking for middle eastern men.

Well I don't want my taxes to go to a station that fires people for saying what they believe. Cut off funding for NPR.
Only 2% of NPR is funded by the Federal Government. And the same argument could be used for funding weapons research.

" I don't want my public money to fund the neutron bomb, nerve gas or land mines, or to support the dictatorship of Oil-Landia." But we live in a democracy and our representatives feel that these things need funding and are in the best interests of the American people. Vote them out if they vote for things you don't like.

Also, to stop funding NPR doesn't just punish Jaun Williams boss, it punishes all the great shows that have nothing to do with politics, such as Scince Friday, All Songs Considered, NPR Playhouse, A Way With Words, and many others. Cutting off fudnding would hurt all those shows as well, just like if one were to cut off PBS funding because you don't like slightly left leaning Bill Moyers, it would hurt Seasme Street, Electric Company, Banrey and Friends, Nova, Front Line, American Playhouse, Ken Burns and Tellitubbies,-all apolitical shows. To me that is classic "throw the baby out with the bath water' mentality. Not a wise move to follow in my opinion.
